What is Steel Beam Installation?

Steel beams and lintels are critical structural elements that carry and distribute the load of your building above openings like windows, doors, and garage entrances, as well as across open-concept spaces where walls have been removed. Installing them incorrectly can lead to serious structural failure. At A & A Setting Stone, our licensed contractors have extensive experience installing steel beams and lintels in all types of residential and commercial buildings. We understand the nuances of proper installation — knowing when to shore in the middle, when to use two shores, and how to account for dead load deflection when working with masonry and grout. Every beam we install is engineered to carry the load safely and built to last.

Our 3 Step Process

1. Structural Engineering & Planning

We assess your structure, calculate the load requirements, and select the correct beam size and placement to ensure your building is fully supported throughout and after installation.

2. Shore & Beam Installation

We temporarily shore the structure above, carefully remove the existing support, and install the steel beam with precision — ensuring proper bearing, levelness, and load distribution.

3. Final Inspection & Cleanup

Once the beam is set and all shoring is removed, we conduct a thorough inspection to confirm structural integrity and leave your site clean and ready for the next phase.

What others are saying

"I thought I knew what hardworking was"

"I tought I knew what "hard working" means but Bledi, Eric and their team raised the bar so high that I have to reconsider. I had a chance to use their expertise for my house in midtown Toronto and work with no one else as long as they are in business of helping the client with every aspect of the construction project."

- Babak Sharaji

"Amazed by the driveway"

"Totally amazed by the driveway that they did for me! The crew was professional, showed up on time every day, and kept the work area clean throughout the whole project. The finished result exceeded my expectations — the stonework looks absolutely incredible and has completely transformed the front of my home. I've already had neighbors ask me who did the work. Will definitely be calling A & A Setting Stone again for my backyard patio!"

- Ermal Kamperi

"Professional, Clean, & On-Time"

"We hired A & A Setting Stone for our basement underpinning and waterproofing. From the first call to the final walkthrough, the team was professional, transparent, and did exceptional work. Our basement has never been drier. Highly recommend them to anyone in the Toronto area."

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions homeowners and businesses ask us before starting a steel beam installation project.

Question 1: How do I know if I need a steel beam installed?

You likely need a steel beam if you are removing a load-bearing wall to create an open concept space, adding a new window or door opening in a structural wall, building an addition, or if your existing beam is showing signs of sagging, cracking, or deterioration. When in doubt call us for a free assessment — we'll tell you exactly what's needed.

Question 2: What is the difference between a steel beam and a steel lintel?

A steel lintel is a smaller structural element installed directly above a window, door, or opening to carry the load of the wall above it. A steel beam is a larger structural member that spans longer distances and carries significantly heavier loads such as an entire floor system or roof above an open-concept space. Both require precise engineering and professional installation.

Question 3: Do I need an engineer for steel beam installation?

Yes — any structural steel beam installation requires engineered drawings to ensure the beam is properly sized for the load it needs to carry. At A & A Setting Stone we work with qualified structural engineers to ensure every beam installation meets Ontario Building Code requirements and is fully permitted.

Question 4: How do you support my home during beam installation?

Before removing any existing support we install a temporary shoring system to safely carry the load above while the new beam is put in place. This is one of the most critical steps in the process and our team has the experience and equipment to do it safely and correctly every time.

Question 5: How long does a steel beam installation take?

Most residential steel beam installations are completed within 1 to 3 days depending on the size of the beam, the complexity of the shoring required, and the scope of surrounding work. We'll give you a detailed timeline and honest quote during your free on-site consultation.
